Australia’s offshore regulator has given the green light for 3D Oil to carry out a 3D seismic survey near the Dorado oilfield, off Western Australia.

The National Offshore Petroleum Safety & Environmental Management Authority (Nopsema) has accepted 3D Oil’s environment plan for the Sauropod 3D marine seismic survey over WA-527-P, in the offshore Roebuck basin.

The acquisition area covers roughly 3500 square kilometres, with the survey aimed at determining potential drilling targets that may be trapped by a Triassic erosional channel system in the south-west of the permit,

3D Oil has previously stated the system is analogous to that which provides the trapping mechanism for the nearby Santos-operated Dorado oil discovery, which is estimated to hold 310 million barrels of oil equivalent, consisting of 158 million barrels of oil and 628 billion cubic feet of gas.
