Malaysian national oil company Petronas is preparing to spud next month an offshore exploration well in Mexico's Block 12, according to joint venture partner Medco Energi.

The Bacalar-1 exploration well is expected to spud in mid-August 2021, and drilling preparations are currently under way, said Indonesian company Medco in its monthly exploration report.

No further details were provided.

Petronas has a 60% operated interest in Block 12, with Medco and PTT Exploration and Production on 20% apiece.

Petronas previously signed a one-well contract with US-based offshore rig owner Pacific Drilling to use the drillship Pacific Khamsin for an exploration programme in Mexico starting in the third quarter.
