Russian independent Novatek's drive to gain control of a cluster of blocks and boost its huge liquefied natural gas ambitions in the Yamal Peninsula are putting it on a potential collision course with state-controlled gas monopoly Gazprom, according to reports.

Novatek sought help from Russian President Vladimir Putin to secure the four Tambey licence blocks to help expand its asset base to the east of its flagship Yamal LNG project.
