Oil giants with operations in Brazil have won more time to conduct exploration activities at their respective concession contracts, as the pace of wildcatting in the country has been severely impacted by the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Brazilian National Petroleum Agency (ANP) has so far granted contract extensions for 29 offshore and onshore blocks and is analysing requests submitted for another 19 permits.

Total's Foz do Amazonas plans

French supermajor Total now has until May 2021 to begin a planned campaign at its five offshore blocks — FZA-M-57, FZA-M-86, FZA-M-88, FZA-M-125 and FZA-M-127 — in the Foz do Amazonas basin in the northern equatorial margin.
