Spain’s Repsol has finally spudded the eagerly awaited Rencong-1X high impact deep-water wildcat, which is targeting a potential gas giant, on the Andaman III block offshore Aceh, Indonesia.

Repsol and partner Petronas are drilling ahead after spudded Rencong-1X in the late afternoon of 18 July, according to Badan Pengelola Migas Aceh (BPMA), the province’s oil and gas management agency. The Malacca Strait exploration well, which is being drilled from a water depth of around 1100 metres by the Aquadrill drillship West Capella, is expected to take 66 days to complete.
