Shell has filed an appeal in South Africa against a recent court ruling that not only prevented it from acquiring offshore seismic data but also called into question the process by which the supermajor was awarded an exploration licence in 2013.

A Makhanda High Court judge ruled earlier this month that the government’s decision to allow Shell to shoot seismic off the country’s south coast was illegal because it went against environmental legislation and that consultations with potentially affected communities had fallen short of expectations.
