European supermajor Shell plans to use the Maersk Drilling drillship Maersk Voyager to carry out a one-well wildcatting programme offshore Suriname in hopes of making a significant discovery in the deep waters of the South American nation.

Shell acquired in late 2020 a number of frontier exploration assets in Africa and South America from US independent Kosmos Energy in a deal worth up to $200 million.

The deal included Block 42 offshore Suriname where Kosmos drilled in 2018 the Pontoenoe-1 well in 2497 metres of water.
