Turkey's state-owned TPAO has spudded the Tuna-1 exploration well in the Black Sea, hoping to find gas in an area where ExxonMobil has made a discovery off Romania.

Energy Minister Fatih Donmez said on Monday the TPAO-owned drillship Fatih began drilling in the Tuna-1 region.

Fatih was located some 100 nautical miles north of Turkey's Black Sea coastal province of Zonguldak, according to Refinitiv Eikon data.

The rig had previously drilled in the eastern Mediterranean for TPAO, without any discoveries.
