The US$3.6 billion Barossa project offshore northern Australia is the largest upstream investment in the region for many years.

It involves the construction of a large newbuild floating production, storage and offloading vessel and a new subsea gas export pipeline running some 300 kilometres to the Darwin LNG plant, which will undergo a US$600 million life extension.

The project is about 15% complete, with prime contractor BW Offshore having cut first steel for the FPSO’s turret mooring system in July and construction of the hull starting 1 September, three months earlier than originally planned, says operator Santos.
