Norway’s Equinor has sold 51% of its interest in the North Platte deep-water oil project in the US Gulf of Mexico to Shell, with the supermajor taking over as operator of the field.
Equinor will retain the remaining 49% interest in the project, the company said on Wednesday.
The companies have also agreed to change the name of the former North Platte development to the Sparta development.
The project is located in four blocks of the Garden Banks region of the deep water US Gulf, some 170 miles (275 kilometres) south of the US state of Louisiana.
