French supermajor TotalEnergies has submitted a critical application to secure a production licence covering its gas-rich Block 11B/12B offshore South Africa.

The acreage off the south coast houses the large Luiperd and Brulpadda discoveries, gas from which is due to be piped to the Mossel Bay gas-to-liquids plant — which is short of feedstock — via the existing state-owned FA platform.

A source familiar with the partners’ plans said the application was lodged with the industry regulator, the Petroleum Agency of South Africa (PASA), on 5 September, the day before the exploration licence covering Block 11B/12B expired.
