Leia Parker has been named as the new editor-in-chief at Upstream.

Parker comes to Upstream with a wealth of oil and gas experience, having led the Dow Jones energy and commodities news teams in the Europe, Middle East & Africa region from the news wires’ London office. She also served on the Dow Jones oil and gas news team in the Americas from the New York office.

A dual US-UK citizen, Parker was at Dow Jones and the Wall Street Journal for 13 years before working for news organisations in Silicon Valley for four years. She has also worked as a freelance writer and editor.

Parker has a master’s degree with honors from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism, and she later completed courses in data journalism, video, data-visualisation and digital photography.

Among her many achievements is coaching reporters on sourcing and storytelling, including a Pulitzer Prize finalist who later revealed in June 2010 that BP managers had issued safety warnings prior to the Deepwater Horizon explosion and oil spill in the US Gulf of Mexico.

Parker is the first Upstream editor to be recruited externally and becomes the first female editor-in-chief among NHST Global Publications – the business unit of Norwegian publisher NHST that includes Upstream, shipping title TradeWinds, renewable energy title Recharge and other publications.

"I am excited to join the talented team at Upstream and NHST Global Publications,” Parker said.

“I look forward to returning to London and working together with a highly competent team in providing the in-depth oil and gas coverage that helps businesses make smart decisions.”

Parker will assume her new position in London from 1 January, 2020.

"I am thrilled to get Leia Parker on board," said Trond Sundnes, chief executive of NHST Global Publications.

“We are in the middle of a transition in the energy sector. I am confident that Upstream, under Leia’s leadership, will continue to deliver exclusive stories as well as challenge, engage and set the agenda in the upstream oil and gas community.”

Hege Yli Melhus Ask, chair of the board of directors at NHST Global Publications, added: "Upstream is a well-established news source for an oil and gas industry that is going through dramatic changes driven by technology as well as a growing sustainability imperative.

“We are very pleased that Leia Parker has accepted the role as editor-in-chief for Upstream. Her deep understanding of the energy sector and its ongoing transition, combined with her strong editorial background and leadership skills, make her a perfect fit for Upstream."
