Since being re-authorised by US President Donald Trump in December, the Export-Import Bank of the US (Exim) aims to greatly expand its influence in Africa and take on lenders from China.

Exim’s mandate is to focus on projects in Sub-Saharan Africa, advised and guided by Congress’ Sub-Saharan Africa Advisory Committee (SAAC), while working with the US administration’s Prosper Africa initiative.

A few weeks before the bank’s mandate was revived in December, SAAC said that “Prosper Africa will fail without a fully functional Exim Bank".
