The new film follows a schoolteacher named Shelly on a cross-country road trip, starting at her family’s dairy farm atop the Marcellus shale in Pennsylvania and on through the hottest shale regions of the US. A direct attack on the earlier film, Truthland presents itself as a simple investigation undertaken by Shelly on behalf of her family to find out if the natural gas industry is really as dangerous as Gasland makes it out to be.
