It was not always going to be this way. In the early days, the development plan was based around a floating platform at the field a spar, semi-submersible or tension-leg platform. This would support facilities for treating the wellstream, enabling direct export of dry gas by pipeline.
Then Norsk Hydro threw in the idea of pulling the whole treatment process back to land.
