The failings uncovered by a PSA audit of maritime systems and load-bearing structures on the ultra-deepwater rig pose a further challenge for the Italian contractor as the unit undergoes final commissioning work at the Westcon yard on Norway’s west coast ahead of sailaway expected early next month.

The Arctic-classed harsh-environment rig is lined up to drill three wells off Norway - one for Statoil at the Odden prospect in the North Sea and two for Eni at Salina and Bonna in the Barents Sea - before starting on a multi-year contract for development drilling on the Eni-operated Goliat field in the Barents, nearly three years behind the original schedule.
