Italy’s Piombino local council has appealed to a court to halt the deployment of a floating storage and regasification unit in its waters, which was approved last month.

Italian operator Snam was granted official approval by the local planning authority to move ahead with construction works to prepare the site, offshore Piombino, where the Golar Tundra FSRU is expected to be located by May 2023.

The project is part of Italy’s strategy to wean itself off Russian gas and increase liquefied natural gas imports to diversify its sources of supply.
