US independent Kosmos Energy is understood to be in pole position to take control of a major gas discovery offshore Equatorial Guinea, where a floating liquefied natural gas vessel is set to be installed.

Last year, Upstream reported that Golar LNG and New Fortress Energy had teamed up to provide a deep-water FLNG unit for use on the 2.5 trillion cubic foot Fortuna gas discovery in Block 27, southwest of Bioko Island.

Block 27 — which was formerly called Block R — has lacked an operator since Ophir Energy quit the country a few years ago.
