National oil company Kumul Petroleum has awarded contracts for the design, development and engineering of a new floating, storage, re-gasification and power generation (FSRP) project in Papua New Guinea.

Kumul confirmed Monday it had awarded one of the contracts to a partnership between Japan’s Chiyoda and Norway’s Moss Maritime, with the second award being handed to China’s Wison Offshore & Marine.

The FSRP project will be located on Papua New Guinea’s northern coast, near Lae, and have the capacity to generate 75-megawatts of power to be exported to the local transmission grid.

Lae is an area of major mining activity in PNG and the FSRP project has been earmarked to meet power demand for increasing activity in the region.

The facility will also have the ability to offload LNG to smaller local island facilities to further support increased industry activities in the area.

The facility is scheduled to provide first gas in the fourth quarter of 2024 and forms part of Papua New Guinea’s strategic plan to connect 70% of the PNG population to secure electricity by 2030.

“The benefits of this facility will be felt by all Papua New Guineans. Not only will more people have access to electricity in the home, but industry will be able to grow providing a better economic outlook for the future,” said Kumul managing director Wapu Sonk.
