Russian gas giant Novatek has denied that its Yamal liquefied natural gas project supplied the majority of its cargoes last year to Europe, which would have seen it compete with state-controlled Gazprom's pipeline exports to the region.

Novatek chairman Leonid Mikhelson was reacting to an earlier estimate by Russian energy minister Alexander Novak that Yamal LNG - which has three trains with total annual capacity of almost 17 million tonnes - delivered between 12 million and 13 million tonnes of its output to Europe last year, with Russia becoming the single-largest supplier of LNG to the region, overtaking the US.
