TotalEnergies has no firm plans to revive activities on its stalled Mozambique LNG project in 2022 and will only return to insurgency-hit Cabo Delgado province when refugees are back living in their villages, said chief executive Patrick Pouyanne today.
The French supermajor declared force majeure on the $20 billion project in March 2021 after Islamist insurgents attacked Palma town in Cabo Delgado, close to the Afungi LNG construction site, killing local people and overseas workers.
Since then, with Mozambique’s armed forces unable to control the insurgency, President Filipe Nyusi reached out to Rwanda and the Southern African Development Community for military assistance which was forthcoming.
