Environmental lawyers have submitted an official complaint against supermajor BP for “greenwashing” with low-carbon claims in its adverstising, according to ClientEarth, a non-profit legal group.

The NGO is calling for regulation covering all fossil fuel advertising, which it argues should come with “a tobacco-style health warning about the dangers to people and the planet”.

ClientEarth filed the BP complaint under OECD guidelines, an international set of rules governing corporate conduct.

“We have asked the UK National Contact Point, which handles OECD guideline complaints, to rule on whether BP should be allowed to run what we think are greenwashing adverts,” the legal group said.
