Senior figures in the UK oil and gas industry have urged the government to create “commercial and environmental certainty” so five carbon capture, usage and storage (CCUS) projects can move into front-end engineering and design by the end of next year.

Steve Phimister, Shell’s UK upstream vice president, said oil and gas companies could play a major role in delivering CCUS but the “pathway to the commercialisation of these projects and their deployment at scale is still not completely clear and we have work to do”.
