European energy companies have called on the European Union (EU) to increase decarbonisation efforts and raise its greenhouse gas reduction target for 2030 as the UN Climate Change Conference, COP25, kicked off in Madrid.

Portugal’s EDP, Italy’s Enel, Spain’s Iberdrola, the UK’s SSE, Norway’s Statkraft, Austria’s Verbund and Denmark’s Orsted also called on European environment and climate ministers to commit to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 at the latest.
