Rig owner Maersk Drilling and equipment maker National Oilwell Varco have launched a five-year partnership to help reduce costs and minimise downtime.

Under the deal, rig maintenance will be carried out using a "condition-based" approach, where overhaul and repairs will be done as rolling maintenance while the unit is operating, rather than during special periodic surveys (SPS) at quayside every five years or so.

The announcement follows a deal between Maersk and GE announced last week that will see those two companies collaborate on a pilot project using data analytics to increase productivity and reduce maintenance costs for rigs.
