The new rules require operators to minimise accumulation of tailings ponds over the life of their oil sands projects.
In addition, new ponds must be removed within 10 years following the end of an oil sands operation's life. Legacy ponds must be ready to remove by the end of life.
The rules also lay out new reporting requirements, including a 1 November deadline for existing operators to submit tailings pond management applications.
