Macquarie claimed the cost of Wheatstone could rise to $33 billion after it was revealed the start-up date of the LNG project had been pushed back six months to mid-2017.

“Schedule slippages rarely do not transpire to additional cost pressure,” Macquarie analyst Kirit Hira wrote in a note.

Chevron has not stated what affect the delayed start-up will have on the cost of the project, but it is expected to carry out a review of expenses in the second quarter.
