Concern from prosecutors and the public led to legal action to investigate or ban the practice in Parana, Maranhao and Piaui states in the last 12 months, although shale exploration in Brazil remains in its infancy and most interest has been in mature fields, according to Silvio Jablonski, chief of staff at Brazil’s National Petroleum Agency (ANP).

Given the predominance of Brazil’s pre-salt resources, unconventional gas is not seen as a ticket to energy security as in the US, but can help strengthen the country’s power grid and supplement other existing power sources, Jablonski told a panel at Rio Oil & Gas.

“If
