The BGS said that the programme includes monitoring groundwater, seismicity, emissions and fluid flowback at shale gas operations, with all data to made publicly available online.
The BGS said that science-based monitoring programme will span from baseline measurements through to hydraulic fracturing and production tests to well abandonment.
The national geocience organisation wants to use the monitoring to provide scientific data on shale exploration to better inform all stakeholders in UK shale from the public to operators to regulators.
