The Anglo-Australian player said in an operations report that its Shenzi North-ST2 well "encountered hydrocarbons" in Green Canyon Block 609 and is still drilling ahead.
The probe was carried out by drillship Transocean Deepwater Invictus in 1309 metres (4294 feet) of water. Total depth was 9223 metres at the end of September.
The second sidetrack spud on 15 August and kicked off at a depth of 4093 metres (13,430 feet), according to a permit filed with US regulators.
