Anglo-Australian multinational BHP Billiton has hit pay in a well in Block 3A off the coast of Trinidad & Tobago.

BHP revealed in its quarterly report this week the Ruby-3 well had reached a depth of 1996 metres and encountered hydrocarbons.

It did not give any further details, other than saying the well had been plugged and abandoned.

BHP hit oil in the Ruby-1 discovery well in 2006, with the well flowing at 5000 barrels of oil per day during testing.
