The Atoll-1 well was drilled by the semi-submersible Maersk Discoverer at North Damietta Offshore concession in water depths of 923 metres to a total depth of 6400 metres.

The probe hit around 50 metres of gas pay in high quality Oligocene sandstones, the London-listed oil major.

BP said it would drill ahead by another 1000 metres to test the same reservoir that proved gas-bearing 15 kilometres to the south at 2013’s Salamat discovery.
