Directed by Peter Berg and featuring a cast of well-known Hollywood actors led by Mark Wahlberg, the film focuses closely on the events immediately before and after the infamous blowout and explosion on the eponymous Transocean semi-submersible rig Deepwater Horizon that was drilling the Macondo prospect for BP in 2010.
The accident killed 11 workers aboard the rig and the blowout resulted in the release of millions of barrels of oil into the US Gulf of Mexico, ultimately costing BP more than $50 billion in clean-up costs and penalties.
