In an announcement, Buru said the configuration of the well from previous drilling operations made it unsuitable to deal with the high pressures being found in the well.
The company started work to extend the well to a total depth of 3200 metres in May, but will instead abandon it at 2798 metres, Buru said today.
Drillers had hit the interpreted top of the regional overpressured section at a depth of 2786 metres, with an immediate increase in drilled gas to over 600 units and circulation gas in excess of 3000 units.
