The latest lawsuit is being brought by three Texas-based law firms representing the owners of about 30,000 acres that Chesapeake leased in McMullen, Dimmit and LaSalle counties.
The plaintiffs allege that Oklahoma City-based Chesapeake used a variety of tactics to limit royalty payments including deducting certain costs when leases prohibited deductions, using oil and gas prices that were below market value, using artificially low production figures and deducting costs that were never actually incurred by the company.
