Federal US records show that Chevron filed for a permit late last month for "permanent abandonment" at Gibson, located in Keathley Canyon Block 96.
A well-placed source said the plugging operation has completed and the rig - drillship Pacific Santa Ana - is preparing to head to the next prospect.
Chevron did not have an immediate comment on Tuesday afternoon.
The well was drilled in 4838 feet of water and permitted to a depth of 31,782 feet.
