CNOOC Ltd, the offshore unit of state-owned China National Offshore Oil Corporation, completed China’s first high-pressure/high-temperature and deep-water well using the $1 billion rig Haiyang Shiyou 981, the official Xinhua news agency reported, citing a company statement.
The exploration work has sparked protests in Vietnam after the deployment of the rig last year allegedly in the country’s exclusive economic zone and on its continental shelf, with the drilling site located just over 100 nautical miles (185 kilometres) off the Vietnamese coast.
