ConocoPhillips in Timor hunt

ConocoPhillips is sinking the first of two wells in the Timor Sea as it hunts for more gas to fuel the potential expansion of the Darwin liquefied natural gas project.

The semi-submersible drilling rig Stena Clyde spudded the Barossa-1 well on 24 July in Block NT/P69. This well will be followed by the Caldita-2 appraisal well in NT/P61.

Barossa-1 has pre-drill upside potential of more than 250 million barrels of oil equivalent, according to well partner Santos.

Water depth at the location is 227 metres.

The Barossa accumulation, previously known as Lynedoch, was discovered some time ago, with two wells hitting gas. However the reservoir size and quality has not yet been defined by a drillstem test, said Santos.

Caldita was discovered last year. The discovery well found a significant hydrocarbon column in a high-quality reservoir interval.

ConocoPhillips has 60% interests in blocks NT/P69 and NT/P61, with Santos holding the remaining 40%.
