Contractors are being requested to carry out calculations based on the new guidelines to determine the size of the air gap - the distance between the underside of the lowest deck and highest wave crest - on each of their rigs and provide feedback to the Norwegian classification outfit, according to a release.

As many as 100 rigs that have been classified by DNV GL will now be reassessed under the initiative and could require modification work, such as removal of windows, or face restrictions on which geographical areas and weather conditions they can operate in.
