Ecopetrol wins name game dispute
Colombia's Ecopetrol said on Tuesday said it had emerged victorious in a copyright dispute against an oilfield-training company that called itself the similar name of Ecapetrol.
The state-led company said the Superintendency of Industry and Commerce (SIC) in Colombia took its side in the dispute with a 4 June ruling.
The SIC determined that the name was "very easily confused, especially since the training school is dedicated to offering courses and training in Ecopetrol's areas of influence in areas relating to oil activity."
Ecopetrol claimed the similar name was used without permission and the business did not take action after multiple requests to remove the name from company signs and stationary.
The SIC also determined Ecopetrol was a recognised brand name.
The Ecapetrol school, which has dozens of offices in Colombia, Venezuela and elsewhere, could not be reached for comment after business hours on Tuesday.
It remains unclear whether the training school also boasted a lizard mascot.
