Elliston find not commercial

Australia-listed Beach Energy has failed to hit commercial pay in the Cooper basin at the Elliston-2 well.

According to joint venture partner, Cooper Energy, the well intersected one metre of oil pay in the primary Namur sandstone, which was not enough to warrant oil production.

Cooper exploration manager Andrew Thomas said the well penetrated the top of the reservoir two metres deeper than originally planned.

“However, the oil-water-contact in Elliston-2 was encountered at the same depth as in Elliston-1 which has been on production since December 2012,” he said.

“This indicates that Elliston-1 is accessing oil from a different part of the field than previously thought.”

Joint venture partners are reprocessing 3D seismic data over the Elliston field and nearby areas to get a better understanding of the sub-surface structure.

The Elliston-2 has been plugged and abandoned at a total depth of 1660 metres.

Beach Energy is the operator of PPL 249 and holds a 75% interest, while Cooper holds a 25% interest.
