As part of the settlement, Enbridge will pay $61 million in fines for Clean Water Act violations related to a July 2010 release on line 6B of its Lakehead pipeline system, which delivers about 1.7 million barrels of oil in the US each day.
The incident in south-central Michigan saw more than 20,000 barrels of heavy crude spill into the river, making it the largest onshore oil spill in US history.
