The operator said a potential 15 billion cubic metres of gas in place was found at the Nooros prospect some 120 kilometres north-east of Alexandria.
The find at the Nidoco NW2 Dir NFW well could be larger as it includes upside and associated condensdates.
The well reached 3600 metres and hit a 60-metre-thick gas-bearing sandstone interval of Messianian age with "excellent petrophysical properties," Eni said.
