Austria was one of the partner countries for the Gazprom-led South Stream pipeline that had aimed to bring Russian gas volumes to western Europe without passing Ukraine.
The pipeline would have run offshore from the Russian Black Sea to Bulgaria and then onshore via Greece, Serbia, Hungary, Croatia, Slovenia and Italy before terminating at Baumgarten in Austria.
The pipeline project was cancelled
