Shell said on its website and on Twitter that it has suspended drilling operations but reported that no production was affected.
"As a precautionary measure, we are taking the necessary steps to prepare and secure our assets in the Gulf of Mexico," the company said.
"This includes limiting the amount of personnel offshore to those directly involved in the core activities essential to maintaining safe operations."
