Eduardo Cunha, the former speaker of Brazil’s lower house of Congress, has been sentenced to jail for more than 15 years for corruption, money laundering and tax evasion.

Cunha, who was arrested on the charges last October, will be held in custody even during any appeal process following the sentencing by Judge Sergio Moro, the Parana-based judge who is behind the massive Operation Car Wash probe into historical corruption involving state oil giant Petrobras.
