US supermajor ExxonMobil has kicked off a two-well exploration campaign in the Gippsland basin, off the south-east coast of Australia.

ExxonMobil is drilling two gas exploration wells, known as Baldfish and Hairtail, offshore Victoria in its wholly-owned Vic/P70 Block using the semi-submersible Ocean Monarch.

“The two wells will be drilled in water depths ranging from 350 to 700 meters, amongst the deepest water depths drilled in the Gippsland basin,” ExxonMobil Australia chairman Richard Owen said.

“These wells are targeting gas prospects, with the objective of proving up resources for timely development and contribution to the Australian domestic gas market.”
