The country's Energy Minister Raphael Trotman had already revealed earlier this week that the US supermajor had struck hydrocarbons at its first appraisal probe on the Liza discovery.

Irving, Texas-based ExxonMobil said on Thursday that the Liza-2 well had confirmed "a world-class discovery" on the Stabroek block, estimating potential recoverable resources of between 800 million boe and 1.4 billion boe.

The appraisal well struck more than 190 feet (58 metres) of oil-bearing sandstone reservoirs in Upper Cretaceous formations.
