The IEA’s governing board has appointed Birol to replace Maria van der Hoeven at the helm of the Paris-based agency when she completes her four-year term on 31 August.
Birol has worked at the IEA since 1995, most recently as chief economist and director of global energy economics.
The 56-year-old oversees the influential strategic analysis published each year by the IEA, the World Energy Outlook.
