Michael Surkein, a senior consultant with the US supermajor's materials section and corrosion control group, told delegates at OSEA 2014 in Singapore that corrosion prevention measures need to start early due to the many contaminants present at yard facilities, such as dirt, dust, salt and oil.

This corrosive effect is multiplied almost 50 times when the vessel goes offshore and it can potentially result in maintenance costs being almost as many times higher, he warned.
